Are you thinking about getting face lift surgery (rhytidectomy)? Not everyone who wants to look younger needs a rhytidectomy to see results. For many patients, non-surgical treatments with a skilled dermatologic surgeon can provide anti-aging results. They can even delay the need for surgical interventions.
Postpone a Rhytidectomy (Facelift) With Non-Surgical Anti-Aging Treatments
Starting as young as possible, great skin care, sun protection, and professional treatments in a dermatologic surgeon’s office can help you prevent or postpone the need for facial plastic surgery. However, if you’re at the point where you’re thinking about a rhytidectomy, there are still options that can help you achieve a more youthful look.
BOTOX & Dermal Fillers
Cosmetic injectables help reduce visible aging in a variety of ways going beyond the smoothing of crow’s feet or lip enhancement. In the hands of a skilled dermatologic surgeon, injectables like Botox and dermal fillers can also correct facial volume loss and sagging.
- Correcting Sagging Jowls: We can lift and tighten jowls to smooth your jawline using Botox and facial fillers. Botox injections can be used to tighten the jawline muscles. Facial fillers injected into the cheek area can also lift the loose, sagging skin while also restoring lost facial volume. We often use Juvederm Voluma and Restylane Lyft for this job, but the appropriate filler varies from patient to patient. Sculptra is also a popular injectable to correct facial sagging, as it rebuilds collagen beneath the skin. This provides greater support for the skin. Many patients combine Sculptra with a hyaluronic acid filler like Juvederm or Restylane for even greater results.
- Eye Rejuvenation: If you have under-eye bags/dark circles or brows that droop, you may have considered an blepharoplasty (eye lift) or a brow lift as part of your rhytidectomy. However, injectables like Restylane under the eyes and Botox into the brow area can restore a more youthful, alert appearance. If you’re just noticing these signs, microneedling can also help for prevention and to reverse aging progression.
Microneedling and Laser Skin Rejuvenation
Whether or not you choose cosmetic injectables, you may also consider a series of laser or microneedling treatments to assist with facial rejuvenation and anti-aging. Microneedling and laser skin resurfacing treatments help in a variety of ways.
- Boosting Natural Collagen and Elastin Production: Collagen provides volume and support beneath the skin while elastin improves skin elasticity. Both also increase skin healing to reduce the signs of aging.
- Reducing Surface-Area Imperfections: Fine lines, wrinkles, sun damage, uneven skin tone and texture, and even scars make us look older. Microneedling and laser skin treatments help reduce the appearance of these surface imperfections.
While these treatments don’t provide dramatic results for patients who have more advanced signs of aging, they can be used to supplement other treatments and as a preventative measure.
Kybella and CoolSculpting’s CoolMini
Your face may be smooth and youthful, but what about your neck and chin? While Botox can tighten neck muscles for a smoother look, it does nothing for double chin fat. Liposuction can reduce submental fullness, but if you want to avoid surgery, both Kybella and CoolSculping are FDA-approved for double chin reduction.
- Kybella is an injectable treatment that melts fat beneath the chin. It was the first FDA-approved non-surgical treatment for submental fullness.
- CoolMini was developed as a specialized double chin applicator using CoolSculpting, the #1 non-surgical fat reduction procedure. With the CoolMini applicator, CoolSculpting double chin reduction was FDA-approved and works well to reduce submental fullness.
Non-Surgical Treatments to Improve Results Following Rhytidectomy
Many patients won’t see their desired results without a rhytidectomy. However, if you have facial plastic surgery, you can still benefit from non-surgical cosmetic enhancements and skin treatments.
While a rhytidectomy can tighten loose skin, it does not restore lost facial volume. Therefore, many patients still benefit from dermal filler treatments. Laser skin treatments are also incredibly popular following a rhytidectomy, as the surgery does not address skin care to correct sun damage and scars. Botox and Botox alternatives like Dysport and Xeomin are also popular with patients following facelift surgery for fine lines and maintenance.

Acne is more than just another aesthetic skin concern. Acne can have real medical consequences that affect a patient’s self-esteem and overall wellness. Inflammation, infection, and pain can require antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medications, and visible scars. Thankfully, patients have more options for acne treatments that can help soothe the skin, reduce inflammation, and destroy bacteria. Sometimes, you may not even require a prescription. Every patient is different, and that’s why we provide so many acne treatment options here at the Laser and Skin Surgery Center of Indiana.
Acne Treatment Options You’ll Love at the LASSI
The aestheticians at LASSI, the Laser and Skin Surgery Center of Indiana, are proud to offer patients a wide range of acne treatment options to help clear up active acne, reduce the number of breakouts, and maintain clearer skin. In addition to providing these aesthetic acne treatments, our practice is also a dermatology and dermatologic surgery center. Owned and operated by board-certified dermatologic surgeon Dr. C. William Hanke, our acne patients can feel more confident knowing that a physician with training and expertise in skin care is in charge of both their medical and cosmetic acne treatment solutions.
Our aesthetics clinic, LASSI Skin, provides acne patients with the following aesthetic acne treatments that are not only effective but also something that our patients look forward to:
IPL Photofacial for Acne
IPL stands for intense pulsed light. An IPL photofacial uses different wavelengths of light to correct uneven pigmentation in your skin and kill the Propionibacterium that contributes to acne. IPL also causes the sebaceous glands in the skin to shrink. These glands produce fats and oils that lubricate your skin and hair but also feed bacteria when they are clogged with dirt and oil.
You will probably need about three to six IPL treatments before you see results. The sessions last about 20 minutes. There’s no downtime, so you can go back to school or work right after your treatment. Your skin may be a bit more red than usual after an IPL treatment, but that goes away after a couple of days.
Blu Light therapy kills the bacteria that causes active acne. It uses a fluorescent blue light that is completely painless. We recommend that most patients come to our clinic a couple of times per week for best results. All you have to do is put on eye protection and sit or lie in front of an arrangement of U-shaped light bulbs. Each Blu Light session lasts about a half an hour and can be very relaxing.
Microneedling is a treatment that stimulates your body to produce collagen and elastin, which are springy and stretchy materials found in the lower layers of your skin. During a microneedling session, you are given a topical anesthesia followed by a skin care product. The aesthetician then uses micropen to glide across the skin while the spring-loaded action makes microscopic punctures in the skin. The body considers this a microscopic injury and sends collagen and elastin to the area to heal it. At the same time, your skin absorbs the topical skin care product. Microneedling lasts about 20 minutes, and patients have between three and six sessions to see the best results.
Another benefit of microneedling is that it will simultaneously reduce the appearance of any acne scars you may have developed, giving you even clearer skin.
An acne chemical peel is a gentle, superficial peel that exfoliates the very top layer of skin. The peel formula has materials that reduce inflammation and control secretions from the sebaceous glands. It’s often recommend that you combine an acne peel with an acne facial (see below) for best results.
HydraFacial is the newest form of microdermabrasion that combines several skin care treatments in a single procedure. Also called hydradermabrasion, the Hydrafacial system cleanses and exfoliates the skin while infusing it with nourishing ingredients designed to treat and hydrate your skin. The best part is that we are able to customize the treatment to your needs.
Facials are one of the most pleasurable treatments we provide here at the LASSI. Your aesthetician will first cleanse your skin, followed by a series of masks, steam, and massage to exfoliate and hydrate your skin. As you can imagine, this treatment is not only not painless but relaxing. Following your acne facial, you will have an opportunity to discuss the products used and be able to purchase skin care products right in our practice to help you improve and maintain your results at home. Your aesthetician will happily guide you through the process of selecting the right products for your needs.
If you have cysts, papules or nodules, your aesthetician may give you a cortisone shot directly into the lesion. This destroys it within 24 hours. It is the solution if you have a date or an important event to attend and need your skin to be clear in a hurry.
What if I need a prescription acne treatment?
If you need a prescription, LASSI’s board-certified dermatologic surgeon can prescribe medications such as retinoid creams, antibiotics, isotretinoin, and others. There’s a long list of prescription topical and oral medications that can help clear up acne. The prescription(s) recommended for you will be determined by the type of acne you have, what other acne treatments you’ve already tried, how often or recently you’ve taken antibiotics, and if you’re a woman who is pregnant or nursing.

If you’ve noticed that you have more visible wrinkles, skin-sagging or other imperfections but want to avoid facial plastic surgery, you have options. Anti-aging facial treatments provide exceptional results that may allow you to avoid surgery and delay the need for injectable procedures like Botox and fillers. Anti-aging facial treatments can also be used to enhance the results of other non-surgical cosmetic procedures, such as laser skin resurfacing, and your home skin care regimen.
Anti-Aging Facial Treatments at the LASSI
The most popular anti-aging facial treatments offered at the LASSI include Hydrafacial, Microneedling, IPL Photofacial and other facials and chemical peels. Each treatment offers unique benefits to solve various facial aging issues.
HydraFacial: Next Generation Microdermabrasion
The HydraFacial combines a gentler version of microdermabrasion with a series of serums to provide a beautiful, healthy look with no irritation, pain, dryness or downtime. The hydradermabrasion treatment repairs environmental damage and improves skin texture and tone. It can be customized to treat acne, reverse signs of aging and brighten the complexion. There is also a special formula designed to treat sensitive skin. After your treatment, you will immediately notice that your skin is deeply hydrated, refreshed and rejuvenated.
Microneedling: Stimulate Natural Collagen Production
Microneedling, also known as Collagen Induction Therapy, is one of our newer anti-aging facial treatments. It is performed using a hand-held device that creates tiny punctures on the surface of the skin. These channels allow topical products to deeply penetrate the epidermis. Each treatment typically lasts for 20 minutes, and visible results can be seen within a couple of weeks.
This nonsurgical, minimally invasive treatment increases the body’s natural production of collagen and elastin. The Collagen P.I.N. device that is used for this treatment has been shown to more effectively activate cellular regeneration than other similar devices.
Microneedling helps reduce the appearance of wrinkles, capillary vessels and fine lines. The treatment can tighten and lift the skin, repair acne scars, and treat uneven pigmentation and stretch marks. Most patients find that microneedling is a good alternative to skin resurfacing procedures as it creates similar results with less discomfort and irritation.
Facials and Chemical Peels
Facials and chemical peels are some of the most common anti-aging facial treatments. All of our facials are performed with Jan Marini and Epionce medical-grade skin care products. Each treatment is designed to improve the condition of your skin while addressing your specific skin issues.
Our botanical facial is perfect for all skin types. The anti-aging facial hydrates and reduces fine lines and wrinkles with a custom hydrating antioxidant blend. Acne-prone skin is calmed with our purifying deep pore cleanse that promotes a clear complexion and better skin texture.
Our signature chemical peels are used to even out skin tone and minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. They are created with advanced formulas to treat sensitive skin, minimize acne breakouts, reduce the appearance of sun spots and hyperpigmination, and repair signs of aging.
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) PhotoFacial
The Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) facials treat rosacea, brown spots, broken capillaries and sun damage. One of our most advanced anti-aging skincare treatments, IPL PhotoFacials use broad-band light to provide effective results with no recovery period or downtime. Exceptional outcomes can be expected when IPL is used in conjunction with other pulsed-light treatments, hydradermabrasion and facials.

Ring in the New Year with These Popular Cosmetic Treatments
Our Most Popular Cosmetic Treatments Help You Look Amazing for NYE
Many people wait until a new year arrives to make lifestyle changes, but you don’t have to wait for the holiday to start your resolutions. You still have time to look great before the ball drops with today’s popular cosmetic treatments.
Look Amazing in Your Cocktail Dress: CoolSculpting Non-Surgical Body Contouring
CoolSculpting is a popular cosmetic treatment that freezes away unwanted fat. While the procedure is not a weight loss solution for obesity, it will tone your physique. To be a good candidate for CoolSculpting, you need to have visible bulges on specific areas of your body – ones you’d like to unload.
Treatment Areas: The FDA has approved CoolSculpting for double chins, abdomens, thighs, and flanks. The treatment option is also effective for the fat bulges along your back and below your buttocks.
Downtime: With CoolSculpting, you’re unlikely to experience downtime. In fact, you can return to work the day of the procedure.
Results: You should start to see changes in your body as quickly as three weeks following your treatment. After about two months, you’ll see the procedure’s most dramatic results. For four to six months after a CoolSculpting procedure, your body will continue to flush out the treated fat cells.
Take a Better Selfie: Kybella and CoolMini Double Chin Reduction
Treatment Areas: Kybella and CoolMini are treatment options for the area below your chin to reduce submental fullness. While Kybella is currently being tested body fat elsewhere on the body, it is only FDA-cleared for double chin reduction. CoolMini is simply a special CoolSculpting applicator specifically suited for the double chin.
Kybella Downtime and Results: With Kybella, you will likely experience bruising, swelling and numbness, so you may need to take some time to heal. Most people see visible results with two to four treatments of Kybella, but you can have as many as six treatment sessions. The results of Kybella are permanent once you reach the look that you desire. It can take up to 12 weeks to see the final results of the treatment.
CoolMini Downtime and Results: Because a CoolMini treatment is nonsurgical, you won’t experience downtime following the procedure. Patients begin to see results in just one to two visits, however, more treatments may be necessary depending on the patient.
Banish Lines and Wrinkles: Botox, Dysport and Xeomin
If fine lines and wrinkles are making you feel less than celebratory this year, consider popular cosmetic treatments like Botox, Dysport or Xeomin. These products are injectable neuromodulators. They are formulated to modify the nerve impulses of your facial muscles. This decreases the look of wrinkles.
Treatment Areas: Botulinum toxin is FDA-approved for treatment of lines and wrinkles across the forehead, between the eyebrows (called the 11s), and crow’s feet. It’s also FDA-approved for the treatment of hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating).
Downtime: You’ll experience minimal downtime with cosmetic wrinkle relaxers. Swelling from injections typically subside within a couple of days.
Results: The results from Botox should be noticeable within 2-3 days, with full results appearing within 2-3 weeks. You will need to follow up on the treatment every four to six months.
Countdown to the New Year’s Kiss: Lip Enhancement with Restylane Silk and Juvederm Volbella
Restylane Silk and Juvederm Volbella are hyaluronic acid fillers formulated specifically for lip enhancement. The fillers are thinner than other HA fillers, giving patients a smoother, softer, natural-looking result.
Treatment Areas: Both Restylane Silk and Juvederm Volbella are formulated to treat thin lips, lip asymmetry, and lines around the lips.
Downtime: Patients report experiencing swelling and tenderness at the injection site. Dr. Hanke uses advanced cannula techniques which are painless. Results are usually always excellent. These side effects are mild and typically last for one or two days. We recommend patients avoid makeup for 12 hours following treatment, and sun/saunas for about two weeks.
Results: After the injection, you should see results immediately. According to the manufacturer, 59 percent of those who have the treatment continue to see an improvement after six months with Restylane Silk, and up to a year with Juvederm Volbella.
Laser Skin Treatments
While a laser skin treatment can be used to treat birthmarks and acne, the procedure also evens out skin tone, diminishes the signs of sun damage and reduces wrinkles.
Treatment Areas: Lasers can be used almost anywhere on the body, but patients typically have treatments on the face, neck, and hands.
Downtime: You can expect downtime in the form of pinkness that ranges from one to seven days, depending on the laser.
Results: You may need from one to four sessions to see noticeable results from a laser treatment. It can take up to four months for the procedure’s final results to appear.
Other Popular Cosmetic Treatments to Look Refreshed for the Ball Drop
Chemical peels are exactly as the name describes. A chemical formulation is applied to the skin to gently and gradually peel away the top layer of skin, revealing healthier, more youthful skin. Peels are great for patients with acne, blotchy red and brown spots, fine lines, and wrinkles.
Treatment Areas: Chemical peels are most often applied to the face, neck, decolletage, and backs of the hands.
Downtime and Results: Gentle peels generally don’t require downtime, but you may experience redness or swelling. Chemical peels will cause your skin to actually peel, so give your face enough time to heal if you have an event coming up. A light peel will last for a month or two, while deeper peels affect your appearance for a longer amount of time.
Facials are relaxing professional treatments that cleanse, moisturize, and massage the face, neck, and decolletage. Each facial uses different products specific for your skin type and anti-aging needs.
Treatment Areas: Facials, as the name suggests, are most often applied to the face. However, the best facials also include the neck and decolletage. Back facials are also available for patients who are prone to breakouts or dry skin.
Downtime and Results: You will not experience downtime from a facial. If you need blemish extractions, then it will take a few days for you to see the full results as your skin will need to heal. Many patients have a facial about once a month.
Microneedling is a non-surgical treatment that stimulates collagen production. Also called Collagen Induction Therapy, a series of treatments will reduce the appearance of scars, lines, wrinkles, and even stretch marks.
Treatment Areas: Collagen induction therapy is mostly applied to the face. However, some patients have benefitted from treatments elsewhere on the body to treat scars and stretch marks, such as the belly and thighs.
Downtime and Results: There’s little downtime with microneedling. You may experience redness for as long as five days. Full results are seen over time after a series of monthly treatments.

What is the Best Crow’s Feet Treatment?
Crow’s feet, the fine lines that extend from the outer corners of the eyes toward the temples, are one of the first signs of facial aging. Often caused by squinting, crow’s feet begin to appear in our 30s. Thankfully, there are fast acting, long lasting treatments available for crow’s feet, like Botox, and preventative measures like retinol that patients in their late 20s and early 30s can try. Learn about the best crow’s feet treatment options available at the LASSI in Carmel.
Top 3 Crow’s Feet Treatment Options
You can slow facial aging with the right skin care products and professional treatments. But not any product or treatment will do. Learn about our top 3 crow’s feet treatment options in our Indianapolis dermatology practice.
Retinol: An anti-aging eye serum containing high-quality retinol is important to use as early as your late 20s to help prevent the onset of crow’s feet. We also recommend continuing its use as a lifelong preventative measure and crow’s feet treatment to reduce the appearance of fine lines around the eyes. We recommend medical-grade skin care products we have available for purchase in our practice.
Microneedling: Using a treatment process known as Collagen Induction Therapy, a skin pen with very fine needles creates micro-injuries in the skin to stimulate collagen and elastin production. Collagen rebuilds the supportive scaffolding that holds the skin firm and smooth, while elastin makes the skin supple and more elastic. Coupled with high-quality topicals, microneedling treats and prevents crow’s feet. Patients begin to see long-term results after 3-6 treatments.
Botox: Botox is the gold-standard of cosmetic anti-aging, making it a top choice to reduce the appearance of crow’s feet. Botox works by relaxing the muscles that cause crow’s feet. This temporarily smoothes out the appearance of crow’s feet while also helping to prevent lines from getting deeper and more pronounced over time. Results last for 3-4 months.
Which Crow’s Feet Treatment is Right For Me?
If you’re in your 20s or early 30s and/or aren’t noticing crow’s feet lines that remain after you’ve stopped squinting, we recommend using a daily retinol eye serum. If you want to reduce your chances of developing crow’s feet in your mid- to late-30s, you can begin microneedling treatments in our Indianapolis dermatology practice.
If you choose to apply retinol, make sure you’re using a high-quality sunscreen and wear UV protective eyewear. Some patients are sensitive to retinol. If you have a reaction to retinol around your eyes, discontinue use and discuss alternative skin care products and treatments that can provide crow’s feet treatment and prevention.
If you’ve started seeing crow’s feet lines that remain after you’ve stopped squinting, it’s time to also consider Botox for crow’s feet. If you’re in good health and aren’t allergic to any of the ingredients in Botox, you’re likely a good candidate for treatment. In addition to Botox, Dysport and Xeomin are great Botox alternatives that may be a better fit for some patients. Discuss your options with our board-certified dermatologic surgeon Dr. C. William Hanke during your consultation.

Mohs Surgery Recovery: Minimizing the Appearance of Scars After Surgery
When you are recovering from a skin cancer treatment and have received the relieving news that your cancer is gone, you may focus on the scars commonly visible after surgery. This is particularly true for patients who had cancer removed from the facial area. Fortunately, there are things you can do to reduce the visibility surgical scars. After your Mohs surgery recovery, our skin care team can help you diminish the appearance of scars with different treatments, including our new Microneedling treatment and our tried and true laser skin resurfacing device.
What is Mohs Surgery?
Mohs surgery is specifically designed for the treatment of skin cancer. The treatment was developed in the 1930s by Dr. Frederick Mohs, and has become increasingly popular in the past decade. Mohs surgery is the single most effective method for removing the two most common forms of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Mohs surgery has the ability to remove nearly all cancer cells, while maintaining the integrity of the surrounding healthy tissue. Cure rates with this type of surgery are very high, at 98 percent or greater.
Actor Hugh Jackman Talks Skin Cancer and Mohs Surgery
How Does Mohs Surgery Differ From More Traditional Surgical Techniques?
Mohs micrographic surgery differs from traditional excisional surgery because it is performed all at one site. A dermatologic surgeon trained in Mohs micrographic surgery gives you a local anesthetic before removing a thin layer of skin from the affected area. The skin is then examined microscopically by the Mohs surgeon using frozen sections at the on-site lab. If cancer cells still remain, you are called back into the operating room and another thin layer is removed. The process is repeated until the edges of the final tissue sample are cancer-free. At this point, the dermatologist will suture the wound. In some cases, a skin graft may be necessary.
Laser Skin Resurfacing: Laser Away Scars and Regrow Healthy Skin Tissue
Laser skin resurfacing is performed using an ablative laser. Ablative lasers vaporize the skin on the surface of the body and are an effective method for removing the topmost layer, leaving room for healthy new skin to grow. The CO2 laser can be focused to a very thin beam for scalpel-thin cuts. It can also be used in a more diffused mode to vaporize a greater amount of soft tissue. This process is commonly used to treat a wide variety of skin conditions, including acne scars, extensive sun damage and surgical scars.
The process can take anywhere from a couple minutes to an hour depending on the size of the area to be treated. Because of the ablative nature of the procedure, an anesthetic or numbing agent will be required. The laser skin resurfacing technique stimulates the production of new collagen in the skin to complete the healing process. This is useful in Mohs surgery recovery, reducing the appearance of residual surgical scars once the cancer has been completely removed.
Microneedling: How This Celebrity Beauty Craze Helps Mohs Surgery Recovery
Microneedling, or collagen induction therapy and percutaneous induction, is a minimally invasive procedure and effective skin rejuvenator that helps stimulate the production of healing collagen. The procedure uses a device containing many fine needles that are applied across the skin to create a controlled micro-injury. This injury triggers the body to produce collagen and elastin. The result of microneedling is improved skin texture and increased firmness. Microneedling is also an effective treatment for scars and stretch marks, and the depth of the treatment can be controlled by your provider to ensure the best results.
Before treatment, you will receive a topical anesthetic cream on your face. You will hardly feel anything when your skin care specialist applies the microneedling device. Multiple treatments are often required to achieve the desired final result. You may also benefit from maintenance treatments every six to 12 months. Because it can be performed on all skin types and colors, microneedling is occasionally preferred over laser treatments that can cause pigmentation issues in some darker skin tones.
Microneedling requires no downtime following the first treatment. Initial redness may occur, but this usually dissipates by the next day. For Mohs surgery recovery scars, however, you should expect to receive more than one treatment. Repeat treatments are spaced four to six weeks apart to give your body a chance to rebuild healthy skin cells.
