Botox Cosmetic:  The Gold Standard of Facial Anti-Aging

Botox Cosmetic

Are you tired of crow’s feet, forehead lines and frown lines aging you beyond your years? At the Laser and Skin Surgery Center of Indiana, Botox Cosmetic is the standard for non-surgical anti-aging and facial rejuvenation to correct the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes and on the forehead. Patients and potential patients consistently request this treatment by name because of its proven results and safety record.

Why Choose Botox?

FDA approved in the late 1980s, Botox was originally used as a treatment for blepharospasm, or chronic eye twitching.  Over time, many more medical applications have been discovered including use as a treatment for excessive sweating (hyperhydrosis) and migraine relief.

Individual results may vary from person to person.

In 2002, Botox Cosmetic was approved by the FDA for cosmetic use to minimize the appearance of facial lines and wrinkles caused by muscle movements.  Comprised of botulinum toxin, Botox and its popular counterparts Dysport and Xeomin act as temporary, localized muscle relaxers to reduce excessive muscle movements that lead to:

  • forehead lines
  • crow’s feet
  • frown lines

It’s safe, effective and a popular choice for patients looking for non-surgical solutions to facial rejuvenation.

botox before and after

Individual results may vary from person to person.

It’s important to provide all necessary information to your provider to ensure a safe procedure. Your provider will also discuss:

  • potential side-effects
  • how to prevent bleeding and bruising
  • expected recovery time
  • when you should return for a follow-up visit

It’s important to keep all of your appointments to ensure that your Botox treatment is working and to address any concerns you may have.

What to Expect During Your Botox Treatment

The injections themselves only take a few minutes, but you should prepare to be in our office for at least a half hour for every appointment. Once you are ready for the procedure, your provider will use a fine needle to inject the Botox directly into the muscle causing the lines and wrinkles you wish to diminish. To make you more comfortable, your provider may use a local anesthetic or ice to numb the area, so discuss your options during your consultation. Your provider will instruct you on what to avoid during recovery, including blood thinners such as aspirin and alcohol, to prevent excessive bleeding and bruising. You will begin to see results as soon as 7 days post-procedure and will be asked to return during that time to monitor your progress.

Botox Questions and Answers

Due to misinformation online and in the media, we receive a lot of questions about Botox and other non-surgical facial cosmetic treatments. For this reason, we’ve assembled our own Botox FAQ section below to help you find the answers to your burning questions about facial anti-aging with Botox. If you have any other questions, please discuss with Dr. Hanke during your consultation.

How does Botox work?

Botox works by targeting the muscles beneath your skin. Once it is injected, it acts as a localized muscle relaxer that temporarily smooths out fine lines and wrinkles while preventing the muscle contractions from forming new/deeper lines and wrinkles.

How is Botox administered?

At the LASSI, Botox Cosmetic is only administered by a board-certified dermatologist. Using a fine-gauge needle to target the desired area, Botox is injected into the targeted area to relax the muscles responsible for causing lines and wrinkles.

Who is a good candidate for Botox treatments?

Anyone who has fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes, between the eyebrows or across the forehead can be a good candidate for Botox treatments. Before your injections, you will discuss your medical history and potential risks with your dermatologist to make sure that you are in relatively good health and don’t have any medical contraindications preventing you from having this cosmetic treatment safely, such as allergies to components in the medication.

What is in a Botox injection?

Botox’s active ingredient is a purified protein and bacterium known as onabotulinumtoxinA. When used in facial rejuvenation, this neurotoxin is able to relax the facial muscles that cause fine lines and wrinkles. For more information about Botox ingredients, please see the official medication guide from Allergan.

Are injections painful?

Most patients experience very little pain during the treatment process. A fine-gauge needle is used to limit the pain you experience, and the entire process only takes a few moments to complete. If you have a low pain tolerance or a fear of needles, you can always talk about these concerns with your dermatologist before using Botox.

Can anesthesia be used?

Anesthesia is generally not used because the treatment process is relatively painless. If you are planning on having a surgery or other medical procedure that requires anesthesia afterward, you will want to tell your doctor about your Botox Cosmetic treatment.

How long do treatments take?

In general, it takes less than an hour for the entire injection process. The actual treatment only takes ten minutes, but wait times or paperwork may cause it to take slightly longer. On average, the entire procedure takes about 15 to 30 minutes.

When will I see results?

Following injections, you will start to see results within three to seven days.

How long do results last?

Although personal results vary, the average patient can generally expect results to last for about four months.

Is there any downtime?

Unless you experience side effects following treatment, you should be able to carry on with your normal life. In the first 24 hours, you will want to avoid alcohol or strenuous exercise.

How much does Botox cost?  Is it affordable?

This treatment is more affordable than cosmetic surgery and is reasonably priced. You will want to avoid any locations that offer an overly cheap treatment and look for someone who is board-certified for the procedure.

Who shouldn’t get Botox?

You should not use botulinum toxin if you are allergic to any of the ingredients or have a skin infection. Individuals who have muscle or nerve issues should tell their dermatologist in advance to prevent complications. Pregnant or nursing mothers should also avoid this procedure.

What are the potential complications?

Common side effects include muscle weakness, swallowing problems, breathing issues or difficulties speaking. On occasion, patients may experience all-over muscle weakness, dropping eyelids, loss of bladder control, blurred vision or hoarseness. If you experience any side effects, you should get medical help immediately.

Where can I find Botox before and after photos?

Between the numerous clinical trials and patients who have successfully received treatments worldwide, there are many examples of success with Botox Cosmetic, including publicly available video diaries, written testimonials and before and after photos.

What about Botox for Hyperhidrosis?

Excessive localized sweating (hyperhidrosis) of the palms, soles of the feet, underarms, face, and groin can be successfully treated by injecting tiny amounts into the skin of the affected area.  There is no down-time and recovery is immediate with results lasting 8-12 months.
