Microneedling

Are you ready for a change in your appearance, but not ready for laser treatments to look better? Whether you’re trying to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, or you want to diminish acne scars, stretch marks, and uneven pigmentation, microneedling is a method that can help you achieve it!

A non-surgical treatment, microneedling creates tiny channels in your epidermis to minimize wrinkles, pigmentation issues, and scars. A good alternative to skin resurfacing, this minimally invasive procedure helps your body increase the production of collagen that supports delicate tissue while allowing for deeper penetration of topical products.

Benefits of Microneedling

Microneedling is a form of collagen induction therapy, which offers treatments to improve skin texture and tone by minimizing fine lines and wrinkles and reducing hyperpigmentation of the skin. Reducing superficial defects on your skin benefits your self-confidence as well as your appearance. Treatment can improve stretch marks, acne scars, and vertical lines around your mouth. It can minimize the appearance of capillary vessels as well.

What to Expect During Your Microneedling Treatment

We apply topical anesthesia to minimize any discomfort you may experience during your microneedling treatment. After we prepare the area, our staff will roll a small roller studded with fine microneedles 15 to 20 times in horizontal, vertical, and oblique directions. We are quickly and easily able to control any pinpoint bleeding that may occur. After your treatment, we apply saline-saturated pads to the area. Treatment lengths may vary by the size of the area, but the procedure usually lasts for about 20 minutes.

Microneedling FAQ

Getting answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about microneedling may help you resolve some of your concerns. These are the questions we receive most often from our LASSI patients.

How does microneedling and collagen induction therapy work?

The process utilizes a power handpiece to create tiny channels in the dermis of the skin that initiates the body’s natural healing process to create collagen and elastin. The SkinPen microneedling device allows the provider to adjust depth penetration depending on your needs and desired results. The microscopic punctures also allow topical products to penetrate the skin more deeply, providing advanced results.

How is treatment administered?

After gently numbing the area with a topical anesthetic cream, your provider will use the SkinPen microneedling device across the area of the skin requiring treatment. Depending on your needs, the provider will adjust the depth penetration settings of the fine needles. After your face is sufficiently numbed, a topical skin care product may be applied, allowing for additional skin nourishment and making the area slick; this allows the microneedling pen to glide across the skin more easily.

Who is a good candidate for collagen induction therapy with SkinPen?

*individual results will vary

Almost everyone who has a scar or skin imperfection qualifies as a candidate for the treatment. Age and skin color make no difference in the effectiveness of the process. Any active infections may delay the timing of therapy, but most people who want to improve an affected area can do so.

What makes SkinPen different from other microneedling devices?

There are many microneedling devices on the market that provide good results. We chose SkinPen for many reasons, including that it’s the only FDA-clear microneedling pen available.

Is the treatment painful? Can anesthesia be used?

Our patients experience painless treatment with a local anesthetic we apply to prevent any discomfort during the short procedure.

How long do microneedling treatments take? How many treatments will I need?

Each treatment requires about 20 minutes, and your condition may take as many as six or as few as three sessions. The severity of your problem area determines how many you need. To maintain your improved condition, we recommend that you return for one or two sessions each year.

When will I see the results? How long do results last?

Within a couple of weeks, you may notice a difference in your skin’s texture as the process starts stimulating collagen production. To maintain the results, we recommend you supplement your program with one or two sessions each year.

Is there any downtime with microneedling treatments?

Your first treatment may cause redness for up to five days, but you can wear makeup to cover any lingering effects. Some patients feel a little tightness and slight burning in the area in addition to some mild skin peeling, but this subsides within a few days. Your skin may show a significant difference in texture within 14 days as the treatment starts to take effect.

How much does microneedling cost?

*individual results will vary

Microneedling costs significantly less than laser skin treatments, and the cost depends upon the treatment area, the number of treatments you’ll require, and the topical skin care products necessary to achieve results. During a consultation, our skincare team will be able to provide you with a quote for a single treatment or a treatment series. Patients who purchase a treatment series in advance enjoy a la carte savings.

Who shouldn’t get collagen induction therapy?

Collagen induction therapy is considered safe for most patients. If you’re allergic to lidocaine, discuss receiving treatment without the topical anesthetic with our providers.

What are the side effects of microneedling treatments?

Typical responses to treatment include mild flaking, redness, a slight burning sensation, and tightness. They tend to occur after the first treatment and diminish with successive treatments.

Where can I find before and after photos of microneedling results?

SkinPen before and after photos can be found on their official website. Our skin care experts can also show you before and after photos upon request in our dermatology practice.
