Belotero FAQ

The Belotero Balance injectable filler is ideal for treating delicate areas like the smile lines, vertical lip lines or moderate nasolabial folds. Unlike facial cosmetic surgery, the recovery time and side effects are minimal. Instead of waiting for weeks or months to heal, you are able to go about your normal life within days or mere hours.

However, even non-surgical, minimally invasive treatments are still medical treatments and should be taken seriously.  We pride ourselves in complete patient education and have compiled this Belotero FAQ to help you become better informed about this facial rejuvenation treatment.

What is in Belotero Balance?

Belotero Balance is comprised of hyaluronic acid chains. These are mixed with a compound known as BDDE to make the finished mixture. Hyaluronic acid is known for being a naturally occurring substance within the skin that can be synthetically made. Since hyaluronic acid naturally binds with water, it helps to correct folds or fine lines in the skin. This proprietary process uses a cohesive gel to blend in with the natural structure of the skin for a smooth look.

How does Belotero Balance work?

Individual results may vary from person to person.

Belotero Balance, like many popular facial fillers, is comprised mostly of hyaluronic acid.  Hyaluronic acid is naturally produced by the body and acts as a binding agent, drawing water and moisture into the area for youthful plumping of the skin. While hyaluronic acid is normally found in the dermis, this production breaks down over time, causing a reduction in youthful facial volume.  Belotero Balance uses a synthetically-made form of HA that restores the skin’s youthful plumpness and smooths out wrinkles.

How is Belotero Balance administered?

A board-certified dermatologist is qualified to administer injectables like Belotero Balance using a fine-gauge needle while the patient reclines or sits back. It only takes a few minutes for the injection to be completed. Results are immediately visible and can last for six months or more.

Who is a good candidate for Belotero treatments?

Anyone who has fine lines or wrinkles due to the breakdown of hyaluronic acid is a candidate for Belotero Balance as long as there are no contraindications to the treatment such as severe allergies, allergies to ingredients in the medication or prescriptions that could interfere with safe treatment.

Are Belotero injections painful?

Like any injection, there may be some initial discomfort or a slight sting during the procedure. If you are concerned about discomfort during the procedure, we can discuss options for topical numbing or the application of ice.

Can anesthesia be used?

Since Belotero Balance is generally pain-free and the procedure has minimal discomfort, anesthesia is generally not used. This treatment is considered a minor procedure and carries minimal risks.

How long does a Belotero Balance treatment take?

The Belotero injections take only a few minutes to administer, but your entire appointment from start to finish can take up to a half hour. Other than avoiding activities like strenuous exercise for the first day, there are very few restrictions on what you can do after getting the injection.

When will I see results?

Results are typically present immediately after the Belotero injection. As soon as it is injected, the medication immediately starts to bind with water to remove fine lines and wrinkles.  However, full results of most hyaluronic acid filler treatments take about 2-3 weeks to emerge, at which time you will come in for a follow-up appointment to evaluate your results.

How long do Belotero results last?

The duration of the results varies from patient to patient, the location of the treatment and the your lifestyle. In general, the results will last for six months or longer. Areas of the face that engage in speaking, eating or smiling will have results that last for a shorter period of time than sections of the face that rarely move. Repeated treatments are recommended for all patients to maintain results, and our staff will help you schedule follow-up treatments on a schedule that will ensure the best results for your needs.

Is there any downtime after Belotero treatments?

Belotero involves little to no downtime. The majority of patients return to their regular lives immediately after getting the injection. Following the injection, it is ideal to refrain from drinking, excessive sun exposure or strenuous exercise for the first 24 hours.  You will likely experience some swelling and bruising, but avoiding these specific activities will help reduce these negative effects.

How much does Belotero cost?  Is it affordable?

Belotero cost varies by location, amount injected and areas treated.  Affordability is subjective, but as Belotero lasts for 6 months or more, the long-term costs associated with treatment is relatively low.

Who shouldn’t get a Belotero treatment?

Patients with severe allergies or an allergy to gram-positive bacterial proteins should not get Belotero injections. Patients who are taking any medications or supplements that impact the immune system or blood thinners should tell their dermatologist before the procedure to prevent complications.

What are the potential complications of Belotero Balance?

Some of the most common side effects of Belotero Balance include hardening of the skin, swelling, inflammation, changes in skin color, bruises or itching. On occasion, other side effects of Belotero such as dry lips, cold sores, headaches, lip numbness or nasal swelling may develop. Most mild and moderate side effects will go away naturally within seven days. Severe reactions to Belotero are rare and generally avoided during a consultation and thorough medical history intake.
