Which Juvederm Products Are Right For You?

The Juvederm family of fillers are the most well-known fillers in the United States. Developed by the makers of Botox, Juvederm has multiple formulations for different facial rejuvenation procedures. Which Juvederm products are right for you, and is Juvederm even the right type of filler for your needs? Only a consultation with a board-certified dermatologic surgeon can answer those questions, but the below serves as an overview of the different uses for Juvederm products.

Juvederm 101: Which Juvederm Products Are Right For You?

All Juvederm fillers are comprised of hyaluronic acid (HA), a substance that occurs naturally in the human body. Hyaluronic acid attracts and binds with moisture within the body to give skin a plump, youthful look. As we age, HA production slows. Combined with the reduction of collagen and elastin production, skin loses this youthful plumpness. Skin begins to sag and the face looks more hollow. Wrinkles and folds develop and deepen.

Hyaluronic acid fillers like Juvederm help replace natural HA in the face where it’s needed most. Some areas of the face require thin, softer fillers while others need more robust, thick gels. The filler used also depends on how far along the aging process has gone. For example, if wrinkles have just started forming, a thinner Juvederm formulation would make more sense; however, if the wrinkles and folds have deepened significantly, a thicker filler would be recommended.

Juvederm Products and Treatment Areas: What Goes Where and Why?

Juvederm Ultra

The original Juvederm formulation, Juvederm Ultra has many uses. It’s a relatively thin filler, making it easy to work with in areas that require only subtle amounts of volume. Juvederm Ultra is most often used in lip enhancement and to smooth mild-to-moderate laugh lines, also called nasolabial folds and marionette lines, that form around the nose and mouth.

Juvederm Ultra Plus

A thicker version of Juvederm Ultra, Juvederm Ultra Plus is used in areas that require a little more volume. Ultra Plus is used in cheek enhancement, but it’s most often used in the laugh lines around the nose and mouth that are more pronounced. If you have deep nasolabial folds and marionette lines, your dermatologic surgeon may recommend Juvederm Ultra Plus.

Juvederm Voluma

Voluma has one very important job and it does its job very well: cheek augmentation. It’s thicker than Juvederm Ultra Plus and lasts longer. It provides natural-looking cheek enhancement with the added benefit of lifting the jowls, providing a subtle lower facelift and a smoother jawline.

Juvederm Volbella

One of the newest Juvederm products available, Juvederm Volbella is a very thin and soft hyaluronic acid filler. This makes it a perfect solution for lip enhancement, as it provides subtle, natural-looking results. It’s also suitable for treating vertical lip lines, also called smoker’s lines. Due to Volbella’s thin, smooth texture, these very fine lines are easily smoothed without looking “done.”

Juvederm Vollure

Vollure, known as Volift in Europe and Canada, is the newest filler in the Juvederm family. While Juvederm Ultra is thin, Vollure is even softer and gives very subtle results in laugh lines around the nose and mouth.

Juvederm Products vs Restylane Fillers

Juvederm isn’t the only family of fillers that provide facial rejuvenation. Restylane hyaluronic acid fillers are also very popular and provide comparable results to that of Juvederm. In some cases, your dermatologic surgeon may recommend a Restylane filler instead of a Juvederm filler, based on your individual needs.

The Restylane collection of dermal fillers is just as varied as Juvederm and includes a specialized filler for lips, called Restylane Silk; a cheek filler that lifts and volumizes, called Restylane Lyft; and specialized laugh line fillers Restylane Defyne and Refyne. There’s also the original Restylane-L, which has numerous uses in facial rejuvenation.

Neither Restylane fillers nor Juvederm products can boast better results overall, but one family of fillers may be recommended for you based on your unique needs.
