The Juvederm family of fillers are the most well-known fillers in the United States. Developed by the makers of Botox, Juvederm has multiple formulations for different facial rejuvenation procedures. Which Juvederm products are right for you, and is Juvederm even the right type of filler for your needs? Only a consultation with a board-certified dermatologic surgeon can answer those questions, but the below serves as an overview of the different uses for Juvederm products.
Juvederm 101: Which Juvederm Products Are Right For You?
All Juvederm fillers are comprised of hyaluronic acid (HA), a substance that occurs naturally in the human body. Hyaluronic acid attracts and binds with moisture within the body to give skin a plump, youthful look. As we age, HA production slows. Combined with the reduction of collagen and elastin production, skin loses this youthful plumpness. Skin begins to sag and the face looks more hollow. Wrinkles and folds develop and deepen.
Hyaluronic acid fillers like Juvederm help replace natural HA in the face where it’s needed most. Some areas of the face require thin, softer fillers while others need more robust, thick gels. The filler used also depends on how far along the aging process has gone. For example, if wrinkles have just started forming, a thinner Juvederm formulation would make more sense; however, if the wrinkles and folds have deepened significantly, a thicker filler would be recommended.
Juvederm Products and Treatment Areas: What Goes Where and Why?
The original Juvederm formulation, Juvederm Ultra has many uses. It’s a relatively thin filler, making it easy to work with in areas that require only subtle amounts of volume. Juvederm Ultra is most often used in lip enhancement and to smooth mild-to-moderate laugh lines, also called nasolabial folds and marionette lines, that form around the nose and mouth.
Juvederm Ultra Plus
A thicker version of Juvederm Ultra, Juvederm Ultra Plus is used in areas that require a little more volume. Ultra Plus is used in cheek enhancement, but it’s most often used in the laugh lines around the nose and mouth that are more pronounced. If you have deep nasolabial folds and marionette lines, your dermatologic surgeon may recommend Juvederm Ultra Plus.
Voluma has one very important job and it does its job very well: cheek augmentation. It’s thicker than Juvederm Ultra Plus and lasts longer. It provides natural-looking cheek enhancement with the added benefit of lifting the jowls, providing a subtle lower facelift and a smoother jawline.
One of the newest Juvederm products available, Juvederm Volbella is a very thin and soft hyaluronic acid filler. This makes it a perfect solution for lip enhancement, as it provides subtle, natural-looking results. It’s also suitable for treating vertical lip lines, also called smoker’s lines. Due to Volbella’s thin, smooth texture, these very fine lines are easily smoothed without looking “done.”
Vollure, known as Volift in Europe and Canada, is the newest filler in the Juvederm family. While Juvederm Ultra is thin, Vollure is even softer and gives very subtle results in laugh lines around the nose and mouth.
Juvederm Products vs Restylane Fillers
Juvederm isn’t the only family of fillers that provide facial rejuvenation. Restylane hyaluronic acid fillers are also very popular and provide comparable results to that of Juvederm. In some cases, your dermatologic surgeon may recommend a Restylane filler instead of a Juvederm filler, based on your individual needs.
The Restylane collection of dermal fillers is just as varied as Juvederm and includes a specialized filler for lips, called Restylane Silk; a cheek filler that lifts and volumizes, called Restylane Lyft; and specialized laugh line fillers Restylane Defyne and Refyne. There’s also the original Restylane-L, which has numerous uses in facial rejuvenation.
Neither Restylane fillers nor Juvederm products can boast better results overall, but one family of fillers may be recommended for you based on your unique needs.

While it may seem like a subtle feature, your jawline is a major part of your face. As the years go by, the effects of gravity, reduced facial volume, and a reduction in skin elasticity can cause sagging jowls, while stubborn fat deposits accumulate just below the chin. If you’re ready for a smoother jawline without the double chin, a jawline transformation is possible. Even better, it can be done without hours of contouring with makeup every day or surgery!
Non-Surgical Jawline Transformation With Botox, Kybella, CoolSculpting and Fillers
Board-certified dermatologic surgeons use proven cosmetic treatments to give patients a non-surgical jawline transformation. This type of change of appearance involves skin tightening, the destruction of fat cells below the chin and an increase in facial volume using:
- Botox, a localized injectable muscle relaxer,
- Kybella, an injectable double chin reduction treatment
- CoolSculpting, a fat freezing liposuction alternative device
- Dermal Fillers like Juvederm Voluma and Restylane Lyft
Botox for Jawline Tightening
With the proper injection technique, Botox can work to tighten your jawline and slim the lower face for a more feminine appearance. To achieve this, your dermatologic surgeon will inject the substance using a fine gauge needle into your masseter muscle, which is used to clench or grind your teeth.
Kybella and CoolSculpting for Double Chin Reduction
To reduce a double chin without surgery, consider Kybella or a CoolSculpting treatment. Kybella’s active ingredient is synthetic deoxycholic acid, which is a molecule that develops in your body naturally. Kybella is FDA-approved to break down and absorb double chin fat. When your dermatologic surgeon injects the substance below your chin, Kybella eliminates the fat cells, diminishing your double chin.
A CoolSculpting CoolMini treatment is a process of freezing fat cells. This treatment option is gentle and targets the fat cells beneath the surface of the skin. Once they are frozen, fat cells die. When they do, your body eventually eliminates them. This leaves the face looking trimmer and more sculpted. CoolSculpting is also FDA approved to treat other areas of the body, removing unwanted fat without liposuction from the abdomen, thighs, back and more.
CoolSculpting treatments are noninvasive and safe. A treatment takes just 45 minutes to complete, and you should see results after just one or two sessions.

Juvederm Voluma and Restylane Lyft to Lift Sagging Jowls
If gravity and lost facial volume have produced sagging jowls, then Juvederm Voluma or Restylane Lyft can help. Juvederm Voluma is an injectable filler made from hyaluronic acid, a naturally-occurring antigen-free tissue adhesive that keeps your skin looking and feeling soft. Hyaluronic acid also helps your skin hold onto moisture while giving your face added volume. When this thick, gel filler is injected into the cheeks, the product can last for as long as two years. When the cheeks are enhanced, the lower face is naturally lifted to provide a non-surgical lower facelift and jawline transformation.
Restylane Lyft is another injectable facial filler similar to Juvederm Voluma. The difference is in the chemistry, and this difference can cause it to create a different lift than Juvederm Voluma. Also, while Voluma is injected mainly in the cheek area, Restylane Lyft can be injected into the lower face.
Which is right for you? Our dermatologic surgeon Dr. C. William Hanke will provide you with a full consultation to determine which filler is best for your needs.
Are You Ready for Your Non-Surgical Jawline Transformation?
A jawline transformation is possible with the right cosmetic treatment, and you don’t even need surgery! Injectable substances like Botox tighten up the skin while Kybella and CoolSculpting are able to decrease the accumulation of fat beneath the chin. Consider Restylane Lyft or Juvederm Voluma to lift sagging jowls while restoring lost facial volume to enhance your cheeks and reduce the appearance of wrinkles and folds.
At the Laser and Skin Surgery Center of Indiana, we offer all of these non-surgical cosmetic treatments and more. Not only do we offer a wide range of cosmetic anti-aging and rejuvenation procedures, Dr. Hanke also participated in the original clinical trials for Botox and Kybella, making the LASSI an especially wise choice for your jawline transformation in Indianapolis. How to Achieve a Subtle Lower Facelift Without Surgery
Your basset hound is adorable, but looking in the mirror and finding a resemblance in the jowl area isn’t something you ever wanted to see. How do you slow and reverse what time and gravity have done to your once smooth jawline? You may have considered a facelift surgery, but if surgery doesn’t appeal to you, there are non-surgical options available in our Indianapolis dermatology practice. Cosmetic treatments like Botox and certain dermal fillers can provide a subtle lower facelift without surgery, offering results lasting two years or more.

Botox to Tighten Jawline Muscles
Botox has been on the market as a cosmetic wrinkle relaxer since 2002. Following extensive clinical trials and research conducted by dermatologic surgeons nationwide, including in our accredited clinical trials facility, Botox was FDA approved as a temporary treatment to reduce the appearance of forehead lines, crow’s feet, and brow lines. However, Botox is also used as an off-label solution to tighten muscles that have become lax over time. This includes the jaw area in what is known as a masseter muscle. This helps patients reduce teeth grinding, provide a more feminine-looking jawline, and reduce the appearance of sagging jowls for a lower facelift without surgery.
Dermal Fillers to Lift the Lower Face
It isn’t just muscles that lose strength over time. As we age, our bodies produce less collagen, the scaffolding beneath the skin that provides youthful volume and plumpness, and elastin, the protein that gives skin the ability to “bounce back” after being stretched out. As both of these youthful building blocks break down, the face loses volume and the skin begins to hang below the jawline.
With dermal fillers, specifically the newer hyaluronic acid cheek fillers Juvederm Voluma and Restylane Lyft, your dermatologic surgeon can restore lost facial volume. This fills out the area while naturally lifting the sagging jowls. This provides patients with the results of a lower facelift without surgery while also restoring lost volume to the cheeks. The best part? Depending on the filler used, your results can be immediately noticeable and last for up to two years, all without a single incision.
Voluma and Lyft aren’t the only fillers that can achieve this effect. Radiesse also provides patients with facial and jawline rejuvenation. Used in a similar way to Juvederm Voluma or Restylane Lyft, Radiesse is injected by a dermatologic surgeon to restore lost facial volume. The difference with Radiesse is that your results improve over time as the filler triggers natural collagen production, restoring the scaffolding beneath the skin. The result is more youthful facial volume that pulls the loose skin back upward to reveal a smooth jawline.
Sculptra is yet another solution that provides patients with gradual results. The entire face looks more youthful while also providing the patient with that smooth jawline over time and after several injection appointments.

Forget about contouring with makeup, because our holiday beauty tips will give you lasting results in anti-aging and skin care that will leave you looking great long after the makeup wears off. Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin Wrinkle Relaxers
Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin are injectables using the FDA-approved botulinum toxin for cosmetic anti-aging and chronic conditions such as hyperhidrosis and migraines. Before holiday parties, we recommend getting Botox treatments for:
- forehead lines
- crow’s feet
- brow lines
- non-surgical brow lift
- non-surgical neck lift
- hyperhidrosis (excessive underarm sweating)
Cosmetic Dermal Fillers
Facial anti-aging is more than tighter skin and smoothed lines; lost facial volume is responsible for hollow cheeks, thinning lips, and sagging jowls. Fast acting hyaluronic acid fillers restore lost volume, enhance facial features, and reduce the appearance of wrinkles and folds. Some of the most popular filler treatments include:
- Liquid Facelift: Often used in combination with Botox, a liquid facelift uses fillers to restore lost facial volume, including in the nasolabial folds, marionette lines, cheeks, lips, and even the temples and neck. Results last up to 4 months with Botox and 2 years with fillers. Get your treatments 3-4 weeks prior to a major event. Dr. Hanke utilizes painless cannula techniques for fillers. The results are outstanding and side-effects are infrequent.
- Lip Enhancement: Juvederm Volbella and Restylane Silk are specially formulated to provide fuller, more youthful, symmetrical lips with a soft, natural-looking appearance. Results last up to 3-4 months, and we recommend having your treatment 2-3 weeks prior to a big event.
- Cheek Augmentation: Some patients have always wanted fuller “apple” cheeks, while others have seen their cheeks “sink” over the years. This is a natural part of the aging process, but thanks to fillers like Juvederm Voluma and Restylane Lyft, you don’t have to live with it. Even better, results can last up to 2 years! Get your cheek fillers at least 2-3 weeks prior to any party or photo shoot.
- Under-Eye Rejuvenation: Whether it’s the stress and lack of sleep that comes with the holiday season, or you suffer from allergies, non-surgical under-eye rejuvenation with Restylane can help smooth away dark circles and bags under the eyes. Results last up to 3-4 months. For best results, get your under-eye treatment 3-4 weeks prior to a big event.
Holiday Beauty Tips for Injectable Treatments
If you’re considering Botox or fillers as a pre-holiday cosmetic treatment, follow these tips to recover from your treatments more quickly:
- Avoid aspirin and other blood-thinning medications before and after treatment to reduce bleeding and bruising.
- Apply ice after treatment to more quickly reduce swelling.
- Get your treatment 3-4 weeks prior to your holiday parties and portraits. This provides you with ample time to heal from your treatment and see full results.
- Don’t miss your follow-up appointment.
- Don’t get injectable treatments for the very first time prior to a major event or photo sitting. If you’ve never had Botox or fillers before, we recommend coming in for your first treatment about 6-7 months prior to ensure your results are as expected.
- Don’t drink alcohol for one week before and after your treatment, as alcohol increases bleeding.

Non-Surgical Cheek Enhancement with Sculptra Aesthetic, Restylane Lyft and Juvederm Voluma
Whether you’ve watched your cheeks slowly disappear and your jowls begin to sag over the years or you’ve never really had full cheeks and always wished they were plump, cheek enhancement is a great solution to have plumper cheeks and look years younger.
While cheek augmentation used to be restricted to cheek implants, many patients didn’t have natural-looking results. Cheek implants aren’t for everyone, but non-surgical cheek enhancement options have rapidly changed in recent years to include dermal fillers like Sculptra, Restylane Lyft and Juvederm Voluma, all of which are FDA approved solutions to facial anti-aging and cheek augmentation. But which filler is right for you?
Non Surgical Cheek Enhancement: An Overview
Prior to dermal fillers for cheek augmentation, patients would undergo extensive cosmetic surgery to have cheek implants placed. However, cheek implants are often only a good solution for patients who don’t have the cheek bone structure for prominent cheeks and doesn’t address age-related volume and fat loss that dermal fillers can correct.
Top 3 Dermal Fillers for Non-Surgical Cheek Enhancement
Sculptra Aesthetic: Gradual, Long-Lasting Results
Sculptra Aesthetic is a unique injectable anti-aging filler designed to correct shallow or deep facial wrinkles that will respond to a crosshatch injection technique.
Unlike hyaluronic acid fillers, Sculptra stimulates your body to restore the vitality of the skin on its own, triggering the production of youthful collagen from the inside. Collagen acts like a scaffolding beneath the skin, holding up the outer structure to prevent deep folds and wrinkles. The treatment regimen may include up to four treatments spaced approximately three weeks apart to see full results over time.
Restylane Lyft: Natural Looking Definition and Volume
Restylane Lyft is designed to be injected below the skin for the correction of severe facial folds and wrinkles. The filler is comprised of hyaluronic acid (HA). HA is produced naturally by the body and attracts moisture to the area, producing a fuller look with fewer wrinkles. As we age, natural HA breaks down; however, when a hyaluronic acid filler like Restylane Lyft is introduced, it restores that youthful fullness.
In clinical trials of the product, patients reported a 95.2 percent improvement within two months and a 73 percent improvement after 12 months of treatment. Lyft is just one member of the Restylane family. Each product is a clear gel injectable specially formulated to act as natural hyaluronic acid in your body.
Juvederm Voluma: Instant Lift Lasting Up to Two Years
Juvederm Voluma is an injectable gel that instantly adds volume to the cheeks to correct age-related volume loss in adults older than 21. The gel will smooth moderate to severe lines and wrinkles around your nose and mouth and can also be used to provide lip augmentation. The results of using Juvederm Voluma are natural and long lasting.
Juvederm is manufactured from hyaluronic acid, a natural substance found in the skin that delivers nutrients and helps the skin to stay soft and moisturized. Juvederm Voluma is the only clinically proven filler to last for two years and is produced by Allergan, the makers of Botox.
