Restylane Refyne and Defyne

Restylane Refyne and Defyne: What’s the Difference?

Not smiling about your smile lines? With the FDA approval of two new hyaluronic acid dermal fillers by Galderma, you now have more options to smooth away laugh lines and other facial wrinkles and folds. Restylane Refyne and Defyne, two next-generation injectable dermal fillers, are specifically designed to address marionette lines, which run from the corners of the mouth to the chin, and nasolabial folds, which run from the nose to the corners of the mouth. Available at the Laser and Skin Surgery of Indiana, both fillers produce lasting results.

While both fillers address the same treatment area of the face, there are important differences in how each is applied. This includes depth of the lines on your face. During a consultation with renowned dermatologic surgeon Dr. C. William Hanke here at the Laser and Skin Surgery Center of Indiana, we will work with you to determine which of our many facial fillers are right for your needs.

Learn more about why Restylane Refyne and Defyne are exciting the dermatology community and how these fillers are different below.

Restylane Refyne

Restylane Refyne is a hyaluronic acid dermal filler designed to smooth and soften facial lines, wrinkles, and folds while allowing you to maintain a natural look and normal facial expressions. This product features Galderma’s proprietary XpresHAn Technology, which uniquely cross-links the hyaluronic acid particles for superior support and more natural movement.

Restylane Refyne features a small amount of lidocaine to minimize discomfort during treatment. It is designed to be injected into the dermis to smooth away or minimize the appearance of moderate-to-severe facial wrinkles and folds. After being injected, this product may be gently massaged and molded to contour it naturally to the surrounding tissue. In clinical studies, 78.8 percent of participants were satisfied with their results at six months, and 62.3 percent were still satisfied at one year.

Restylane Defyne

Like Refyne, Restylane Defyne features Galderma’s XpresHAn Technology, so its hyaluronic acid particles are uniquely cross-linked to provide exceptional support while still allowing for natural movement. The smooth, relatively thick filler material is designed to smooth away deep facial wrinkles and folds. In particular, it is suitable for addressing nasolabial folds and marionette lines.

This product contains a small amount of lidocaine to minimize discomfort. Restylane Defyne is designed to be injected into the mid-to-deep dermis, and it is used to address moderate-to-severe, deep facial folds and wrinkles. Once it has been injected, the dermatologic surgeon can massage and mold the underlying filler to contour naturally to surrounding tissue. In clinical studies, 77.1 percent of participants were satisfied with their results at six months. At one year, 69.7 percent were still satisfied.

The Difference Between Restylane Refyne and Defyne

Restylane Refyne Before and After

Individual results may vary from person to person.

At first glance, FDA-approved Restylane Refyne and Defyne are essentially the same product. This is true to some extent because both products feature Galderma’s XpresHAn Technology, and both are designed to address facial lines, wrinkles and folds while allowing you to make natural facial expressions.

The primary difference between Restylane Refyne and Defyne is that the former typically is sufficient to address lines, folds and wrinkles that are a bit closer to the surface. Also, Restylane Refyne tends to work best on areas of the face that don’t tend to move much. Restylane Defyne is a bit thicker, so it offers more support. As a result, it tends to work best on areas of the face that move a lot and on deeper lines, folds and wrinkles.

In some cases, both Restylane Refyne and Defyne may be used together, depending on your unique needs.

How Long Do Dermal Fillers Last?

It isn’t just loose skin that makes you look older; lost facial volume is primarily responsible for most of your facial aging woes. Restoring lost facial volume is one of the primary goals in facial anti-aging, which led to the introduction of injectable dermal fillers. These fillers vary in consistency, active ingredients, and application. Some fillers are thicker and recommended for the cheek area, while others are thinner and softer for better results in the lips, for example. Each filler has its own job to do, but how affordable are these fillers in terms of cost and longevity? Why should you choose one filler over another? How long do dermal fillers last?

Dermal Filler Longevity: How long do dermal fillers last and why?

There are many factors that affect the longevity of a dermal filler. These include:

Ingredients: Certain active ingredients tend to increase the longevity of a dermal filler over other fillers meant for the same treatment area and results
Consistency: Thicker fillers tend to last longer than thinner fillers
Patient Lifestyle: Patients that are very active or spend a lot of time in the sun and heat tend to break down their filler more quickly than other patients.
Patient Biology: Body chemistry and behavior are always factors in determining how well any prescription will work. Dermal fillers are no different.

Non-Surgical Jawline Transformation in Indianapolis

While it may seem like a subtle feature, your jawline is a major part of your face. As the years go by, the effects of gravity, reduced facial volume, and a reduction in skin elasticity can cause sagging jowls, while stubborn fat deposits accumulate just below the chin. If you’re ready for a smoother jawline without the double chin, a jawline transformation is possible. Even better, it can be done without hours of contouring with makeup every day or surgery!

Non-Surgical Jawline Transformation With Botox, Kybella, CoolSculpting and Fillers

Board-certified dermatologic surgeons use proven cosmetic treatments to give patients a non-surgical jawline transformation. This type of change of appearance involves skin tightening, the destruction of fat cells below the chin and an increase in facial volume using:

  • Botox, a localized injectable muscle relaxer,
  • Kybella, an injectable double chin reduction treatment
  • CoolSculpting, a fat freezing liposuction alternative device
  • Dermal Fillers like Juvederm Voluma and Restylane Lyft

Botox for Jawline Tightening

With the proper injection technique, Botox can work to tighten your jawline and slim the lower face for a more feminine appearance. To achieve this, your dermatologic surgeon will inject the substance using a fine gauge needle into your masseter muscle, which is used to clench or grind your teeth.

Kybella and CoolSculpting for Double Chin Reduction

kybella jawline transformation and double chin reduction

Individual results may vary from person to person.

To reduce a double chin without surgery, consider Kybella or a CoolSculpting treatment. Kybella’s active ingredient is synthetic deoxycholic acid, which is a molecule that develops in your body naturally. Kybella is FDA-approved  to break down and absorb double chin fat. When your dermatologic surgeon injects the substance below your chin, Kybella eliminates the fat cells, diminishing your double chin.

A CoolSculpting CoolMini treatment is a process of freezing fat cells. This treatment option is gentle and targets the fat cells beneath the surface of the skin. Once they are frozen, fat cells die. When they do, your body eventually eliminates them. This leaves the face looking trimmer and more sculpted. CoolSculpting is also FDA approved to treat other areas of the body, removing unwanted fat without liposuction from the abdomen, thighs, back and more.

CoolSculpting treatments are noninvasive and safe. A treatment takes just 45 minutes to complete, and you should see results after just one or two sessions.

Juvederm Voluma and Restylane Lyft to Lift Sagging Jowls

If gravity and lost facial volume have produced sagging jowls, then Juvederm Voluma or Restylane Lyft can help. Juvederm Voluma is an injectable filler made from hyaluronic acid, a naturally-occurring antigen-free tissue adhesive that keeps your skin looking and feeling soft. Hyaluronic acid also helps your skin hold onto moisture while giving your face added volume. When this thick, gel filler is injected into the cheeks, the product can last for as long as two years. When the cheeks are enhanced, the lower face is naturally lifted to provide a non-surgical lower facelift and jawline transformation.

Individual results may vary from person to person.

Restylane Lyft is another injectable facial filler similar to Juvederm Voluma. The difference is in the chemistry, and this difference can cause it to create a different lift than Juvederm Voluma. Also, while Voluma is injected mainly in the cheek area, Restylane Lyft can be injected into the lower face.

Which is right for you? Our dermatologic surgeon Dr. C. William Hanke will provide you with a full consultation to determine which filler is best for your needs.

Are You Ready for Your Non-Surgical Jawline Transformation?

A jawline transformation is possible with the right cosmetic treatment, and you don’t even need surgery! Injectable substances like Botox tighten up the skin while Kybella and CoolSculpting are able to decrease the accumulation of fat beneath the chin. Consider Restylane Lyft or Juvederm Voluma to lift sagging jowls while restoring lost facial volume to enhance your cheeks and reduce the appearance of wrinkles and folds.

At the Laser and Skin Surgery Center of Indiana, we offer all of these non-surgical cosmetic treatments and more. Not only do we offer a wide range of cosmetic anti-aging and rejuvenation procedures, Dr. Hanke also participated in the original clinical trials for Botox and Kybella, making the LASSI an especially wise choice for your jawline transformation in Indianapolis. Holiday Beauty Tips

Top Holiday Beauty Tips and Treatments

This time of year, the Internet is full of holiday beauty tips and makeup tutorials for a beautiful holiday season. But that’s not what you’re going to find here! Forget about contouring with makeup, because our holiday beauty tips will give you lasting results in anti-aging and skin care that will leave you looking great long after the makeup wears off. Learn about wrinkle relaxing injectables, dermal fillers, and skin care treatments that will have you looking amazing at your next holiday party.

Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin Wrinkle Relaxers

Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin are injectables using the FDA-approved botulinum toxin for cosmetic anti-aging and chronic conditions such as hyperhidrosis and migraines. Before holiday parties, we recommend getting Botox treatments for:

  • forehead lines
  • crow’s feet
  • brow lines
  • non-surgical brow lift
  • non-surgical neck lift
  • hyperhidrosis (excessive underarm sweating)

Cosmetic Dermal Fillers

Facial anti-aging is more than tighter skin and smoothed lines; lost facial volume is responsible for hollow cheeks, thinning lips, and sagging jowls. Fast acting hyaluronic acid fillers restore lost volume, enhance facial features, and reduce the appearance of wrinkles and folds. Some of the most popular filler treatments include:

  1. Liquid Facelift: Often used in combination with Botox, a liquid facelift uses fillers to restore lost facial volume, including in the nasolabial folds, marionette lines, cheeks, lips, and even the temples and neck. Results last up to 4 months with Botox and 2 years with fillers. Get your treatments 3-4 weeks prior to a major event. Dr. Hanke utilizes painless cannula techniques for fillers. The results are outstanding and side-effects are infrequent.
  2. Lip Enhancement: Juvederm Volbella and Restylane Silk are specially formulated to provide fuller, more youthful, symmetrical lips with a soft, natural-looking appearance. Results last up to 3-4 months, and we recommend having your treatment 2-3 weeks prior to a big event.
  3. Cheek Augmentation: Some patients have always wanted fuller “apple” cheeks, while others have seen their cheeks “sink” over the years. This is a natural part of the aging process, but thanks to fillers like Juvederm Voluma and Restylane Lyft, you don’t have to live with it. Even better, results can last up to 2 years! Get your cheek fillers at least 2-3 weeks prior to any party or photo shoot.
  4. Under-Eye Rejuvenation: Whether it’s the stress and lack of sleep that comes with the holiday season, or you suffer from allergies, non-surgical under-eye rejuvenation with Restylane can help smooth away dark circles and bags under the eyes. Results last up to 3-4 months. For best results, get your under-eye treatment 3-4 weeks prior to a big event.

Holiday Beauty Tips for Injectable Treatments

If you’re considering Botox or fillers as a pre-holiday cosmetic treatment, follow these tips to recover from your treatments more quickly:

  1. Avoid aspirin and other blood-thinning medications before and after treatment to reduce bleeding and bruising.
  2. Apply ice after treatment to more quickly reduce swelling.
  3. Get your treatment 3-4 weeks prior to your holiday parties and portraits. This provides you with ample time to heal from your treatment and see full results.
  4. Don’t miss your follow-up appointment.
  5. Don’t get injectable treatments for the very first time prior to a major event or photo sitting. If you’ve never had Botox or fillers before, we recommend coming in for your first treatment about 6-7 months prior to ensure your results are as expected.
  6. Don’t drink alcohol for one week before and after your treatment, as alcohol increases bleeding.

Cheek Enhancement Options

Non-Surgical Cheek Enhancement with Sculptra Aesthetic, Restylane Lyft and Juvederm Voluma

Whether you’ve watched your cheeks slowly disappear and your jowls begin to sag over the years or you’ve never really had full cheeks and always wished they were plump, cheek enhancement is a great solution to have plumper cheeks and look years younger.

While cheek augmentation used to be restricted to cheek implants, many patients didn’t have natural-looking results. Cheek implants aren’t for everyone, but non-surgical cheek enhancement options have rapidly changed in recent years to include dermal fillers like Sculptra, Restylane Lyft and Juvederm Voluma, all of which are FDA approved solutions to facial anti-aging and cheek augmentation. But which filler is right for you?

Non Surgical Cheek Enhancement: An Overview

Prior to dermal fillers for cheek augmentation, patients would undergo extensive cosmetic surgery to have cheek implants placed. However, cheek implants are often only a good solution for patients who don’t have the cheek bone structure for prominent cheeks and doesn’t address age-related volume and fat loss that dermal fillers can correct.

Top 3 Dermal Fillers for Non-Surgical Cheek Enhancement

Sculptra Aesthetic: Gradual, Long-Lasting Results

Sculptra before and after photos

Individual results may vary from person to person.

Sculptra Aesthetic is a unique injectable anti-aging filler designed to correct shallow or deep facial wrinkles that will respond to a crosshatch injection technique.

Unlike hyaluronic acid fillers, Sculptra stimulates your body to restore the vitality of the skin on its own, triggering the production of youthful collagen from the inside. Collagen acts like a scaffolding beneath the skin, holding up the outer structure to prevent deep folds and wrinkles. The treatment regimen may include up to four treatments spaced approximately three weeks apart to see full results over time.

Restylane Lyft: Natural Looking Definition and Volume

Restylane Lyft Before and After

Individual results may vary from person to person.

Restylane Lyft is designed to be injected below the skin for the correction of severe facial folds and wrinkles. The filler is comprised of hyaluronic acid (HA). HA is produced naturally by the body and attracts moisture to the area, producing a fuller look with fewer wrinkles. As we age, natural HA breaks down; however, when a hyaluronic acid filler like Restylane Lyft is introduced, it restores that youthful fullness.

In clinical trials of the product, patients reported a 95.2 percent improvement within two months and a 73 percent improvement after 12 months of treatment. Lyft is just one member of the Restylane family. Each product is a clear gel injectable specially formulated to act as natural hyaluronic acid in your body.

Juvederm Voluma: Instant Lift Lasting Up to Two Years

Juvederm Voluma before and after

Individual results may vary from person to person.

Juvederm Voluma is an injectable gel that instantly adds volume to the cheeks to correct age-related volume loss in adults older than 21. The gel will smooth moderate to severe lines and wrinkles around your nose and mouth and can also be used to provide lip augmentation. The results of using Juvederm Voluma are natural and long lasting.

Juvederm is manufactured from hyaluronic acid, a natural substance found in the skin that delivers nutrients and helps the skin to stay soft and moisturized. Juvederm Voluma is the only clinically proven filler to last for two years and is produced by Allergan, the makers of Botox.
