Non-surgical treatments for body sculpting are everywhere. Treatments for fat reduction, skin tightening, and even cellulite reduction promise results without liposuction. While liposuction can still provide excellent results for many patients, more and more are interested in non-surgical body sculpting treatments. In this article, we’ll explore two different body sculpting treatments we offer in our Indianapolis dermatology and aesthetics practice: CoolSculpting for fat reduction combined with Z-Wave for cellulite removal.
Combination Body Sculpting Procedures at the LASSI
CoolSculpting is the #1 non-surgical fat reduction procedure in the United States. At the LASSI, we provide this treatment for all FDA-approved treatment areas, including the inner and outer thighs and beneath the buttocks (banana rolls). However, many patients who desire fat reduction in the upper legs also want to reduce the appearance of cellulite. As you may have guessed, CoolSculpting does not treat cellulite.
Enter Z-Wave. This cellulite reduction treatment uses a handheld massage device to gently and comfortably break up pockets of gas and fat strands that cause skin dimpling. In addition to cellulite reduction, Z-Wave can also improve your visible results following a CoolSculpting treatment.
How does this combination body sculpting procedure work?
CoolSculpting freezes fat using cryolipolysis. This kills the excess fat cells without damaging surrounding tissue. Once the fat cells are frozen and break apart, they are absorbed and filtered out through the body’s lymphatic system. Following any CoolSculpting treatment, the area is massaged to help speed up the breakdown of frozen fat cells. This helps improve visible results in the treatment area more quickly.
Adding on the Z-Wave treatment, the handheld pulsing device designed to break up pockets of cellulite can also be used to more effectively break up the frozen fat cells. This provides more precise, faster results. On top of that, the cellulite in that area is also broken up to reveal a smoother skin surface.
Can liposuction treat unwanted fat and cellulite in a single procedure?
While liposuction can help improve the appearance of cellulite to a small degree, many patients will still benefit from an additional cellulite treatment following the procedure. This will improve overall body sculpting results. Once you’ve healed, our providers at LASSI Skin can give you a relaxing massage experience with the Z-Wave cellulite reduction device.

Do you have pockets of stubborn fat in areas of your body despite being your ideal weight? If you’re looking for a solution to unwanted fat without surgery, CoolSculpting boasts non-surgical fat reduction with real results. But does CoolSculpting work?
Does CoolSculpting Work As Well As Reviews Claim?
Does CoolSculpting work as well as they say? Board-certified physicians conducted CoolSculpting clinical trials to test the safety and effectiveness of each treatment area. Following each clinical trial, physicians agreed that the system works to safely reduce unwanted fat, and the FDA cleared the device.
Does CoolSculpting work? It most certainly does, but individual results vary. Like any medical procedure, it’s not right for everyone. Furthermore, choosing the right providers is essential to see real results. This is why a consultation at a reputable medical facility is recommended to know if CoolSculpting is right for you and get excellent results.
How Does CoolSculpting Work?
The science of CoolSculpting is rather straight forward and easy to understand for most patients. The key to understanding how CoolSculpting works is to learn how body fat acts within the body and how it responds to cold temperatures.

Understanding Body Fat
Body fat is essential for human survival. It provides warmth and energy when food is scarce. What you may not have known is that the body doesn’t create fat cells when we gain weight; rather, our existing fat cells expand. If we use a body contouring procedure, such as CoolSculpting or liposuction, we remove pockets of fat cells. With those fat cells gone, you have fewer to hold fat and expand.
Cryolipolysis Fat Freezing Technology
CoolSculpting is the first and only FDA-approved body contouring solution that utilizes crylipolysis, a specialized cooling technique that works to freeze specifically targeted fat cells during treatment. Freezing kills the fat cells. Once destroyed, they are gradually eliminated from the body through the natural processes of the lymphatic system.
On What Areas of the Body Does CoolSculpting Work?
CoolSculpting was originally approved for belly fat and love handles (or the abs and flanks). Since then, physicians have tested other areas of the body through clinical trials. Where else does CoolSculpting work? Find out where you can get your fat frozen off below.
CoolSculpting for Abs and Flanks
Upper and lower abs and the flanks have been successfully treated with CoolSculpting for years. They’re the most commonly requested treatment areas from both men and women looking to achieve a slimmer physique. Stubborn pockets of fat cells, usually sticking around due to genetic predisposition, are frozen and eliminated. Each area can be treated separately using a single applicator, though you can treat more than one area simultaneously with more than one CoolSculpting device and applicator.
Back and Bra Fat Reduction
Back fat and underarm fat that bulges when wearing a bra or strappy dress are two of the newer treatment areas to be approved for treatment. The process is the same as with the abs and love handles. Even a very small pocket of fat can be targeted and eliminated using crylipolysis.
Inner and Outer Thigh Slimming
The thighs are another highly requested treatment area for fat reduction. This includes both the inner and outer thighs. Whether your inner thighs rub together, causing discomfort, or your outer thighs give you a wide-hipped look you don’t care for, CoolSculpting can effectively eliminate the stubborn fat cells that gather in those areas.
Until just a few years ago, the dreaded double chin could only be reduced using liposuction. In the same year, both Kybella and CoolMini for CoolSculpting hit the market. Does CoolSculpting work on the double chin? CoolMini is FDA approved and it has been shown to reduce double chin fat by an average of 20 percent. Multiple treatments are often required, as with other treatment areas.
Reduce Upper Arm Fat
Another area of fat you can blame on genetics is upper arm fat. It’s that hanging bulge of fat that wiggles when we wave at someone, making us reluctant to wear tank tops in the summer. Thankfully, the FDA recently approved CoolSculpting for arms, so you can wave goodbye to flabby upper arms.
Does CoolSculpting work on other areas of the body?
Some other areas of the body can be treated using CoolSculpting, like the knees and beneath the buttocks, also called “banana rolls.” Both have shown excellent results in many patients. Cryolipolysis has also been tested on gynecomastia (male breast enlargement) with excellent results.
Choosing the Right Providers
When you hear people who have tried CoolSculpting say it didn’t work for them, you may doubt its effectiveness. Instead of asking, “Does CoolSculpting work?” however, consider asking where they received the treatment. There’s an old saying that a tool is only as good as the person using it. If a nail is bent while hammering, it’s not the hammer’s fault, but the person wielding it. So if patients are receiving their CoolSculpting treatments with providers who don’t have the skills, training, and expertise in body contouring, their results won’t be as good as they can be.
Don’t make the mistake of thinking that a non-surgical procedure can be done by anyone. It takes training and an understanding of body contouring to safely and effectively use CoolSculpting. At the Laser and Skin Surgery Center of Indiana, our providers are trained and supervised by Dr. C. William Hanke, a board-certified dermatologic surgeon and body contouring expert. In addition to providing patients with superior results using tumescent liposuction, he trains and lectures other physicians on body contouring techniques. This makes him, and our staff, uniquely qualified to provide superior CoolSculpting results.

Now Offering CoolSculpting in Indianapolis at the LASSI
We’re pleased to announce that our Indianapolis dermatologic surgery center is now offering CoolSculpting, a popular and effective non-surgical liposuction alternative.
CoolSculpting uses cryolipolysis, a deep cooling technique that freezes unwanted fat cells beneath the skin, leaving skin tissue unaffected. This fat freezing process destroys the fat cells, which are then disposed of using the body’s natural waste removal system.
CoolSculpting is FDA approved for non-surgical body contouring and can be used to treat:
- Belly Fat: CoolSculpting is perfect for subcutaneous fat (fat beneath the skin) in the abdominal region.
- Obliques: Also called “love handles,” the stubborn pockets of fat just above the hips can be eliminated using the CoolSculpting system.
- Inner & Outer Thighs: Whether you’re striving for the thigh gap or want to get rid of your saddle bags, cryolipolysis has proven fat reduction results. Need to sculpt both? No problem!
- Back and Bra Fat: If you have some bulge in your bra area or back fat, CoolSculpting can help smooth things over.
- Double Chin Fat: Using the new CoolMini applicator, CoolSculpting can be used to freeze away submental fullness for a smoother, more youthful profile.
CoolSculpting is also being tested on the knees and upper arms and shows promising results.
CoolSculpting in the Media
CoolSculpting isn’t just a great solution to unwanted body fat, it’s a media favorite as well. It’s been featured in health and beauty magazines, nationally syndicated talk shows and local news stations across the country. Also, CoolSculpting’s Brand Ambassador Molly Sims isn’t just their spokesmodel; she’s a CoolSculpting success story herself!

Liposuction vs Tummy Tuck: Which do I need?
Struggling with excess fat around the middle? Fed up with loose skin following weight loss or pregnancy? While working out, losing weight and eating right is a great start to a journey to a healthier you, it doesn’t always leave you with the look you want. So while those side bends and leg lifts are great for flexibility and muscle strength (keep up the good work!), you may be considering a cosmetic surgery procedure such as a liposuction or tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) to rid yourself of that extra inch or two. But which treatment is right for you? This article examines the difference between liposuction vs tummy tuck surgery.
Liposuction vs Tummy Tuck: What’s the Difference?
You might assume that a tummy tuck and liposuction are essentially the same thing. However, there are many differences between the two procedures. When it comes to liposuction vs tummy tuck, a professional can determine which will work best for you. With liposuction, excess fat is removed. A tummy tuck, on the other hand, is designed to remove the sagging or loose skin left behind after weight loss or pregnancy. It is also designed to help tighten your underlying abdominal muscles to give you a toned, taut appearance.
What to Expect During a Liposuction Procedure
If you want to trim excess fat with a low-risk procedure that doesn’t have a lot of downtime, Dr. Hanke’s tumescent liposuction procedure has been proven to be extremely effective and safe for removing any localized fat deposits that have accumulated over the years. The patient is awake during the procedure which utilizes tumescent local anesthesia. Post-procedure recovery is rapid with outstanding results.
Following tumescent liposuction, you can typically return to work in one to three days. Depending on how much you weigh, the amount of tumescent local anesthesia will vary. Your safety is our top priority, so the amount of fat removed is limited. Unrelated surgical procedures are not performed along with this procedure to protect your health and well-being.
What to Expect During a Tummy Tuck Surgery
Tummy tucks are major surgical procedures that require general anesthesia. Excision and liposuction are both used to eliminate fat and a large portion of excess skin. While you do end up with a flatter stomach, some scarring may remain. The muscles in your abdominal wall are visible during this procedure so the surgeon can tighten the muscles at the same time. Tummy tucks provide a trim and toned core, but the recovery time is much longer than liposuction alone. Recovery time varies from patient to patient, but you can expect complete recovery to take four weeks or more.
Can I Get Liposuction and a Tummy Tuck Together?
Tummy tucks and liposuction tend to go hand-in-hand. If you have a lot of loose, sagging skin and excess fat, having both procedures done at the same time can help tackle both problems simultaneously. In fact, tummy tucks use liposuction to eliminate the excess fat before the surgeon can remove the excess skin and help sculpt and tighten any loose abdominal muscles. Most patients do not require both procedures, which is why it is so important to discuss your concerns with the surgeon beforehand. Your dermatologic surgeon will want to know what you are looking to achieve with the procedure and get a chance to do an evaluation in person to determine if you need a liposuction vs tummy tuck, or both.
Considering a Tumescent Liposuction Procedure in Indianapolis?
