Juvederm Ultra & Ultra Plus

Juvederm Indianapolis

As we age, gravity takes its toll, leading to sagging skin. Collagen begins to diminish, making us lose the fresh-faced look of youth. Juvederm is a collection of dermal fillers that plump up lines and wrinkles in the face, replenishing that lost volume.

Made from a cross-linked hyaluronic acid, this gel is injected beneath the skin to fill out wrinkles and make the overlying skin appear smoother. Juvederm Ultra Plus can be used for even deeper wrinkles, providing men and women of all ages a more youthful appearance.

Uses for Juvederm Ultra and Ultra Plus

Juvederm dermal fillers are used to sculpt and contour facial features. They are most commonly used to fill in laugh lines around the mouth and nasolabial folds, but can be used to fill in wrinkles and atrophic scars anywhere on the face. They are also sometimes used for creating a lifted look within the cheeks or jawline, and for lip augmentation.

Because hyaluronic acid is naturally found in connective tissue, it is metabolized by the body. Cross-linking the compound prevents it from being metabolized as quickly and helps it last longer. Juvederm Ultra is thinner and smoother and may be used closer to the surface of the skin or to fill in less dramatic wrinkles. Juvederm Ultra Plus is a thicker gel that provides more bulk for deeper wrinkles and folds and typically has longer-lasting effects.

Common Juvederm Questions

As with any aesthetic treatment, patients have questions regarding safety and results. As with all medications, prescription or over-the-counter, discussions with your physician are key in making the right decision. As Juvederm is a prescription, a full health evaluation must take place by a board-certified dermatologist and their medical support staff. However, if you’re considering Juvederm hyaluronic acid filler for your facial rejuvenation needs, being well informed ahead of time is helpful. Here are a few FAQs to help you get started in deciding if Juvederm is right for you.

How do Juvederm Ultra & Juvederm Ultra Plus Work?

Hyaluronic acid gel fills in areas in the face that are sunken or lined, resulting in a smoother, younger appearance. Hyaluronic acid binds with water to help restore youthful plumpness and fullness. Results are temporary, but typically last up to a year. Repeated treatments are recommended to help maintain your youthful appearance.

Juvederm Ultra XC is a thinner gel consistency that uses hyaluronic acid to bind with water and correct the appearance of moderate wrinkles and folds. Juvederm Ultra Plus XC, a thicker hyaluronic gel formulation, is better for deeper set wrinkles.

How is Juvederm administered?

The gel is injected into the skin with a thin needle by a board-certified dermatologist. Depending on the patient’s needs, a topical anesthetic may be used to help maintain comfort during the procedure.

Who is a good candidate for filler treatments?

Individual results may vary from person to person.

Any healthy adult with wrinkles, lines or acne scars who wants the skin on his or her face to appear smoother, plumper and younger is an ideal candidate for the injectable procedure. Some patients who are looking for facial balance, such as with an injury that caused a sunken appearance in the face, may also find that Juvederm can help restore facial symmetry.

What is in Juvederm?

Juvederm is made of hyaluronic acid, an element that naturally occurs in the skin, but breaks down as we age. When it’s not cross-linked, the compound acts as a viscous liquid and is absorbed readily by the body. Cross-linking the material transforms it into a gel that is broken down much more slowly by the body. Hyaluronic acid absorbs moisture, lending a more hydrated, radiant appearance to the skin.

Are dermal filler treatments painful? Can anesthesia be used?

Most patients report that there is little to no discomfort during a Juvederm dermal filler treatment. Your provider may use a topical anesthetic or another form of the filler that also contains lidocaine, to minimize your discomfort during the procedure.

How long do filler treatments take? When will I see results?

It only takes about 15 minutes for the filler to be injected into the skin.  Allow yourself about 30 minutes total for treatment time.

Juvederm fillers are fast acting and show results immediately.  However, as some swelling may occur, it will take a few days for you to see the full effects that Juvederm will have on your appearance.  You will come in for a follow-up appointment so that we can assess the full results of your treatment and decide if a little more filler should be added in order to give you the best results.

How long does Juvederm last?

Individual results may vary from person to person.

You’ll retain your youthful volume for approximately 10 to 12 months following the procedure. Some patients choose to get touch ups throughout the year as well, as every patient is different.

Is there any downtime?

Although you shouldn’t perform any activities like exercising or sunbathing that could increase swelling at the injection sites for 24 hours following the procedure, you can go back to work or hang out with friends as soon as the procedure is over.  Note that you may have some swelling, tenderness and bruising in the injection areas.

How much does Juvederm cost?  Is it affordable?

Depending on the amount of product injected, the cost of an initial Juvederm treatment typically ranges from $400 to $1,300. Less product is required to fill in the under-eye areas and lips, and more filler is typically needed for nasolabial folds.  Remember, Juvederm can last up to a year, so the initial cost may seem high, but the long-term results and cost are actually quite low.

Who shouldn’t get Juvederm?

Women who are pregnant or nursing may not be candidates for the procedure, as well as individuals with numerous allergies or those who are allergic to lidocaine or any other ingredients within the Juvederm filler product. Patients who are on medications that could interact with Juvederm are also not candidates. The best way to find out if Juvederm is a safe option for you is to schedule a consultation with our top notch dermatologic staff.

What are the potential side effects?

Although Juvederm fillers have few side effects, some people may experience mild redness, sensitivity, swelling, slight bruising, itchiness, lumps in the injected areas and discoloration. All injection treatments pose a slight risk of infection, similar to when you receive a vaccination or have blood drawn.
