Restylane Refyne and Defyne

Restylane Refyne and Defyne: What’s the Difference?

Not smiling about your smile lines? With the FDA approval of two new hyaluronic acid dermal fillers by Galderma, you now have more options to smooth away laugh lines and other facial wrinkles and folds. Restylane Refyne and Defyne, two next-generation injectable dermal fillers, are specifically designed to address marionette lines, which run from the corners of the mouth to the chin, and nasolabial folds, which run from the nose to the corners of the mouth. Available at the Laser and Skin Surgery of Indiana, both fillers produce lasting results.

While both fillers address the same treatment area of the face, there are important differences in how each is applied. This includes depth of the lines on your face. During a consultation with renowned dermatologic surgeon Dr. C. William Hanke here at the Laser and Skin Surgery Center of Indiana, we will work with you to determine which of our many facial fillers are right for your needs.

Learn more about why Restylane Refyne and Defyne are exciting the dermatology community and how these fillers are different below.

Restylane Refyne

Restylane Refyne is a hyaluronic acid dermal filler designed to smooth and soften facial lines, wrinkles, and folds while allowing you to maintain a natural look and normal facial expressions. This product features Galderma’s proprietary XpresHAn Technology, which uniquely cross-links the hyaluronic acid particles for superior support and more natural movement.

Restylane Refyne features a small amount of lidocaine to minimize discomfort during treatment. It is designed to be injected into the dermis to smooth away or minimize the appearance of moderate-to-severe facial wrinkles and folds. After being injected, this product may be gently massaged and molded to contour it naturally to the surrounding tissue. In clinical studies, 78.8 percent of participants were satisfied with their results at six months, and 62.3 percent were still satisfied at one year.

Restylane Defyne

Like Refyne, Restylane Defyne features Galderma’s XpresHAn Technology, so its hyaluronic acid particles are uniquely cross-linked to provide exceptional support while still allowing for natural movement. The smooth, relatively thick filler material is designed to smooth away deep facial wrinkles and folds. In particular, it is suitable for addressing nasolabial folds and marionette lines.

This product contains a small amount of lidocaine to minimize discomfort. Restylane Defyne is designed to be injected into the mid-to-deep dermis, and it is used to address moderate-to-severe, deep facial folds and wrinkles. Once it has been injected, the dermatologic surgeon can massage and mold the underlying filler to contour naturally to surrounding tissue. In clinical studies, 77.1 percent of participants were satisfied with their results at six months. At one year, 69.7 percent were still satisfied.

The Difference Between Restylane Refyne and Defyne

Restylane Refyne Before and After
Individual results may vary from person to person.

At first glance, FDA-approved Restylane Refyne and Defyne are essentially the same product. This is true to some extent because both products feature Galderma’s XpresHAn Technology, and both are designed to address facial lines, wrinkles and folds while allowing you to make natural facial expressions.

The primary difference between Restylane Refyne and Defyne is that the former typically is sufficient to address lines, folds and wrinkles that are a bit closer to the surface. Also, Restylane Refyne tends to work best on areas of the face that don’t tend to move much. Restylane Defyne is a bit thicker, so it offers more support. As a result, it tends to work best on areas of the face that move a lot and on deeper lines, folds and wrinkles.

In some cases, both Restylane Refyne and Defyne may be used together, depending on your unique needs.
