The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) represents dermatologic surgeons with the unique training and experience, as board-certified dermatologists, to treat the skin through all stages of life. ASDS member dermatologists are recognized as leaders and pioneers in medical and cosmetic surgery, often involved in clinical studies which bring innovative skin, hair, and body treatments.
What is Dermatologic Surgery?
Dermatologic surgery is focused on surgical and non-surgical medical and cosmetic interventions for the skin, hair, and nails. Example procedures include:
- acne scar treatments
- anti-aging injectables
- body contouring
- laser skin resurfacing
- skin cancer removal and reconstruction
- vein treatments
Our Practice’s Role With the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery
The Laser and Skin Surgery Center of Indiana (LASSI) enjoys a longstanding relationship with ASDS. Our founder and medical-director Dr. C. William Hanke is recognized by ASDS as:
- Past president of ASDS
- Recipient of the Samual J. Stegman Award
- Recipient of the President’s Award
Dr. Hanke also served as Editor-in-Chief for the Journal of Dermatologic Surgery and Oncology.
Advocacy Work With ASDS
The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery ASSOCIATION (ASDSA) works with legislators to ensure safety and quality for patients across the country. This includes proposed and passed legislation related to medical spa safety, laser device safety, and UV exposure educational programs. ASDSA’s positions are transparent and published on their official website, which include statements on:
- indoor tanning
- mandatory hospital privileges
- office-based surgeries
- physician oversight in medical spas
- regulation of physician assistants
- truth in advertising
- laser use
- accreditation
First and foremost, ASDSA is focused on patient safety, recognizing physicians, state dermatologic societies, state/federal legislators, and state/federal regulators for their dedication to patient safety. A couple of previous winners, called “Patient Safety Heroes” are Indiana State Senator Liz Brown and the Indiana Academy of Dermatology.
