Psoriasis

Dermatologists estimate 3 million cases of psoriasis per year in the United States. A very common skin condition, psoriasis presents as red, scaly, dry patches of skin caused by skin cell buildup. However, in more severe cases, it may also affect the joints, causing pain and discomfort.

Due to the similarities between psoriasis and other skin conditions, it’s important to receive diagnosis and treatment from a board-certified dermatologist. While there are over-the-counter skin remedies which aid in treatment, professional treatment and pharmaceutical interventions will likely provide the most relief.

Is it Psoriasis?

Psoriasis looks very similar to dermatitis, so it’s important to have your skin evaluated by a dermatologist. Symptoms include:

  • persistent itching
  • scaly, dry skin patches which flake and peel
  • plaque and thickening of the skin
  • joint pain and stiffness
  • tendon inflammation
  • dents in the nails

For some, psoriasis also comes with depression, as the condition affects quality of life due to pain, discomfort, persistent itching, and embarrassment.

The good news is that help is available at the Laser and Skin Surgery Center of Indiana (LASSI) in Indianapolis.

Your First Appointment

Your first visit to the LASSI will involve a skin evaluation to determine a diagnosis. There are many causes of skin rash, so it’s important to identify the cause of your skin discomfort prior to moving forward with treatment. We will go over your health history and discuss your symptoms. There are no lab tests for psoriasis, so your dermatology provider will rely on your symptoms and health history for proper diagnosis.

If we determine that your skin rash and other symptoms indicate psoriasis, we will move forward with treatment(s) appropriate for your needs.

Treatment Options for Psoriasis

There is no cure for psoriasis. However, there are treatments to help you manage your symptoms and improve quality of life. Treatments include procedures, medications, and routine care at home.

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)

Light therapy is proven to assist with the treatment of psoriasis and other skin conditions. Using devices in a controlled environment, such as our Indianapolis dermatology practice, light treatments can reduce symptoms and improve skin health.

Medications for Psoriasis Treatment

Prescription remedies are often used to treat psoriasis. These may include steroids, Vitamin A, immunosuppressive drugs, and anti-inflammatories.

At-Home Skin Care Products and Lifestyle Changes

Petroleum jelly application is often recommended to protect the skin from excess drying and irritation. Other recommendations may include at-home use of light therapy and trigger elimination, such as stress reduction. Your dermatology provider will send you home with instructions on self-care at home.
