Dysport: A Popular Botox Alternative

Dysport Indiana
FDA approved Dysport, a popular Botox alternative, is an injectable wrinkle relaxer used for the treatment of fine lines and wrinkles caused by muscular       movements in the face around the eyes, between the eyebrows and across the forehead. From Galderma, the makers of the popular Restylane family of fillers, Dysport offers the same benefits of Botox, with slightly different results, application and price point.

Dysport Uses

Dysport is a localized muscle relaxer, used in both medical and cosmetic applications. When utilized for cosmetic facial anti-aging, Dysport relaxes the muscles in the face responsible for causing fine lines and wrinkles. Giving the skin a break from these movements helps reduce the appearance of existing wrinkles and prevents new ones from forming. Dysport is used to treat:

  • forehead lines
  • frown lines (lines between the eyebrows, also called the “11s”
  • crow’s feet

What to Expect During a Consultation for Dysport

dysport before and after

Individual results may vary from person to person.

The first step in any cosmetic treatment is your initial consultation. When you setup your first appointment for any cosmetic facial anti-aging treatments, you will meet with Dr. Hanke. We will take that time to review your medical history, current medications, allergies and skin treatment needs. At the end of the meeting, we will discuss our recommend treatment plans for you. In some cases, patients may receive treatment the same day as their consultation; for others, we will setup your treatment appointment after your consultation.

What to Expect During Your Dysport Treatment

Ice or another light pain reduction method may be administered first. The procedure itself lasts a matter of minutes and involves a series of injections near the eyebrows and the forehead. Most patients return to their daily activities or work immediately after treatment.

Dysport FAQ

In response to the many questions we get about Dysport treatments, we’ve assembled this helpful FAQ to assist you in getting started with Dysport treatments.

How does Dysport work?

This aesthetic treatment works by temporarily relaxing the facial muscles, which otherwise contribute to wrinkles through repetitive facial muscle movements. The muscle relaxation corrects and prevents most wrinkles.

Why should I choose Dysport over a facial plastic surgery procedure?

With injections, the only concern is that additional treatments are needed throughout the year. However, they are quick and come with little to no recovery time. Cosmetic surgeries are riskier for some people, and the results may not last as long as some people hope they will. There is also no scarring and extended downtime with injections. However, some patients may require surgical interventions, such as a blepharoplasty (eye lift), forehead lift (brow lift) or full face-lift (rhytidectomy).

Dysport has had positive results in recent clinical trials. In a double-blind study where success was measured on a 2-grade improvement over a period of 30 days, more than 50 percent of the participants saw complete success with their treatments. In the trial, Dysport was used to reduce the appearance of moderate to severe lines in the eyebrow area from frowning and scowling.

Dysport is FDA approved for cosmetic use in the facial muscles responsible for aging. It’s also approved for use in select medical applications, with more medical uses being tested every year. This is why dermatologists and plastic surgeons across the United States are confident using Dysport to treat facial aging in their patients on a daily basis.

How is Dysport administered?

The treatment is administered by a board-certified dermatologic surgeon. Injection dosages depend on the individual and the size of the treatment area. For most people, a typical upper face treatment consists of 50 or more units of Dysport.

Who is a good candidate for Dysport?

People between the ages of 25 and 65 who are in relatively good health and have lines on their forehead or around their eyebrows are the ideal candidates for this treatment.

What are the ingredients in Dysport?

Dysport is a neuromuscular blocking agent and acetylcholine release inhibitor. Its main ingredient is Botulinum Toxin Type A, and it also includes ingredients such as lactose and human albumin. In some cases, the formula may include cow’s milk.

Is a Dysport treatment painful?

Discomfort is relatively mild, but our team is dedicated to patient comfort at all times. Ice typically makes the discomfort tolerable with Dysport injections, though some patients request a topical anesthetic.

Can anesthesia be used with my Dysport treatment?

Yes, lighter types of topical anesthesia can be used to eliminate any discomfort. Anyone who has not had injection treatments before should discuss anesthesia options with a licensed injection specialist during the consultation. Most patients are relatively comfortable with ice application during the injection process to gently numb the area prior and during treatment.

How long does Dysport take to administer?

The Dysport treatment by itself only takes a few minutes, but you should expect to spend at least 30 minutes in our office for each treatment session.

When will I see results after my Dysport treatment?  How long do results last?

Results typically appear within a few days. Maintenance treatments, performed 3-4 months apart, can be performed to maintain your results.

Is there any downtime with Dysport?

There is no downtime following a Dysport treatment, and patients typically return to their regular lives immediately following Dysport injections. You will see some bruising and swelling after your treatment for about a day or two, which will gradually subside.

What is the cost?  Is Dysport affordable?

In comparison with Botox, Dysport cost is lower per unit. However, as Dysport works a little differently, the price point ends up about the same as Botox. Discuss pricing differentiation with our staff during your consultation.

Who shouldn’t be treated with Dysport?

As Dysport is FDA approved, most people can safely receive it. However, like any prescription or medication, there are those who should not received Dysport.  Anyone with a history of sensitivity to botulinum toxin or lactose, or who is allergic to any of the ingredients, is not a prime candidate. Patients who are taking blood thinners (and cannot safely stop taking them) are not good candidates for Dysport treatments. Some patients who have asthma or other medical conditions should not receive Dysport. If you are not a good candidate for Dysport treatments, we will go over other treatment options to address your facial anti-aging goals.

What are the potential complications with Dysport treatments?

Complications are rare and minimal. The few reports of reactions come from people receiving injections from unlicensed individuals and people who fail to report lactose intolerance or botulinum toxin sensitivity beforehand.

Where can I find Dysport before and after photos and testimonials?

No person wants to seek a cosmetic treatment without seeing proof of its effectiveness first. Some good places to read real and unbiased reviews are on RealSelf.com and DysportUSA.com. These sites have several reviews and before and after photos of patients who have received Dysport for the reduction of forehead lines and wrinkles.
